Nassau County Is Losing Healthcare Expertise, Tax Revenue, and Thousands of Jobs.

Nassau County Is Losing Healthcare Expertise, Tax Revenue, and Thousands of Jobs.

Nassau is losing healthcare expertise, tax revenue, and thousands of jobs because Blakeman failed to deliver promised state-of-the-art hospital.

The Lie:

For more than two years, County Executive Bruce Blakeman promised Nassau residents a brand-new, world-class NYU Langone health facility built right on the Nassau Community College campus. It was supposed to anchor Nassau’s healthcare. Instead, the project was quietly “put on hold” in March 2025 without explanation. Now, Long Island’s first new hospital since 1980 is being built in Suffolk County instead of in Nassau.

Why You May Believe the Lie:

In May 2023, Blakeman announced that NYU Langone would build a massive $3 billion-plus “state of the art,” medical hub. He claimed it would be the “#1 hospital in America,” spreading across 40 acres and creating thousands of local jobs.

The Truth:

In May 2026, NYU Langone officially announced it is bypassing Nassau to build its new 500-bed teaching hospital and research campus in Melville. Suffolk County gets the upgrades; Nassau gets left behind.

Here’s how it affects you and your family:

  • Doctor Drain: The new NYU Langone Melville facility, a 500-bed teaching hospital, will include research laboratories, and it will be a magnet, attracting and recruiting the best doctors. Not only is Nassau not getting this new world class healthcare facility, the new Melville hospital will drain doctors and patients from Nassau. Alec C. Kimmelman, CEO of the NYU Langone health system and dean of its NYU Grossman School of Medicine said their hospital in Mineola, formerly Winthrop University Hospital, will be reduced to an emergency room and clinics, with fewer in-patient beds. And the medical school is relocating from Mineola to Melville. Top medical specialists follow the technology and the teaching facilities. Nassau’s best doctors are likely to move to Suffolk, forcing you to drive further just to see your trusted specialist.
  • Longer ER Wait Times: When local inpatient beds disappear, area Emergency Rooms bottleneck. Expect longer, more frustrating wait times for your family during a medical crisis.
  • Suffolk Gains, Nassau Pays: NYU Langone is pouring billions into the Melville The lucrative construction jobs, permanent hospital staff positions, massive tax revenues, and local business boosts will benefit Suffolk taxpayers—while Nassau residents are left holding an empty bag of broken promises.

Action You Can Take:

  • Share this post on your social media and email and discuss it with your friends.
  • Call Blakeman at 516-571-3131 and tell him to come clean about why NYU Langone walked away from Nassau.
