Deceived Nation pushes back against lies, propaganda, disinformation, and fear-mongering that pollute our elections. At its core, is a network of amplifiers working to differentiate truth from lies, and bring transparency, honesty, integrity and accountability to our political discourse.
Our information ecosystem is rapidly evolving. The internet, smartphones, social media and algorithms/AI are changing how people communicate. The impact on our public discourse is as profound as when the printing press, radio, and television were first invented. And the guardrails that take time to catch up with such massive technological change have yet to be established. Without laws that protect the public from abuse, the billionaire owners of our existing and new information systems have been unwilling or unable to integrate basic norms of truthfulness, decency, and respect.
The Republican party has taken advantage of this to brazenly lie and foment fear to win elections. Trashing journalistic standards has allowed for the proliferation of dangerous disinformation (“they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs”), amplification of conspiracy theories (election denialism), and distraction (Greenland, the Gulf of America, the Panama Canal).
The GOP’s abuse of our rapidly evolving information ecosystem has resulted in a nation vulnerable to deception, which has spawned this Deceived Nation project. Still raw from being victimized by GOP lies that foisted Congressman George Santos on our community for eleven months, residents, voters, and taxpayers are fighting back. The Deceived Nation project uses our community’s 2025 local elections as a laboratory to test new ways to instill honesty, integrity, and transparency in our public discourse.
Together we can bring transparency, truthfulness, and integrity back to our public discourse.
