The Lie:
County Executive Bruce Blakeman and his hand-picked leadership are lying when they say they have fixed the financial problems at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC).
Why You May Believe the Lie:
NUMC issued multiple press releases touting their improved fiscal health. In December 2024, President, CEO, and Chief Legal Officer Megan Ryan said, “This is the most significant financial improvement NUMC has shown in years.”
The Truth:
As of late March 2025, NUMC is on the brink of collapse. The Hospital had planned for a year-end deficit of $97 million, but the actual 2024 deficit is closer to $158 million – 63% worse than planned. NUMC also owes $400 million in unpaid health insurance premiums for its employees, a debt that increases by $7 million each month and not paying, is the only reason NUMC can keep the Hospital’s doors open.
Action You Can Take:
- Share this post on your social media and email and discuss it with your friends.
- Let Blakeman know how important NUMC is to our community and demand he implement legitimate long-term ways to keep NUMC afloat – via email at nassaucountyny.gov/481/County-Executive, or call Blakeman at 516-571-6000 or 516-571-3131 – prompt 5, then “other”.
- Contact Gov. Hochul (518-474-8390 or https://www.governor.ny.gov/content/governor-contact-form) and ask that any State bailout of NUMC be tied to a long-term strategy which includes professional management, not Blakeman or his friends.
