The Lie:
County Executive Bruce Blakeman claims that he is supportive of women, and that he empowers women through services and tools that make them safer, healthier and more successful.
Why You May Believe the Lie:
- Blakeman’s 2025 reelection campaign sent voters a steady stream of  mailers falsely accusing his opponent of protecting rapists, and his television commercials amplify these false claims. The ads and mailings are graphic. Â
The Truth:
- Blakeman has misrepresented a law school research paper written by his opponent over thirteen years ago to falsely accuse his opponent of saying that women fantasize about rape.
- The paper and the footnotes are clear that these are not his opponent’s position or his words. (See Newsday video for specifics). Â
- The so-called quotes were citations of others (and clearly noted as such) in the law research paper. Â
- Worse, Blakeman’s awkward and insensitive approach to injecting the issue of rape into the County Executive race has triggered concerns among rape victims.Â
- Blakeman’s claims of protecting women are particularly deceptive, as his actions led to the shutdown of the Safe Center, Nassau’s only agency for domestic violence and sexual assault victims, in early 2025.Â
- Blakeman’s 2026 budget has zero funding to reopen the Safe Center, leaving the very individuals he claims to protect without services or care.
